CONCEPTS OF DEVELOPMENT

Click here to hear Dan discussing development in Calgary.

Organizations around the world exist under the term "development." In reality, many provide emergency aid or charitable giving, but few provide meaningful, sustainable and appropriate development.

Concept No. 1: There is no such thing as perfect development.

Every form of development has it's weak points. The key is to identify those weaknesses and move towards solving those challenges.

Concept No. 2: Emergency Aid may be necessary, but it is not development.

Organizations that provide emergency aid need to phase out their "aid" and allow true development, understanding that the aid can prevent true development.

Concept No. 3: Charitable giving pleases the donor, but damages true development.

Giving requires nothing from the recipient, instilling no ownership, responsibility or commitment. Long and expensive lists of "wants" dominate. True and sustainable actions are overshadowed or blocked all together. Giving causes proverty.

Concept No. 4: Doing the wrong thing can actually prevent or postpone development.

Charity and poor development practices block sustainable development, providing a very attractive and luring option for recipients. Why work for something that can be received for nothing?

Concept No. 5: Allowing your ego to drive your actions should be a warning sign.

Development organizations are often built on a concept or idea, often tied closely to an individual or group goal. Because of personal commitment, it can be very difficult to alter or abandon this idea if it proves to be poor development.
